Power BI - workaround for Changing 'Ownership'

If one person creates the report (and therefore 'Owns' the report), no one else can change the selections in the report in the dataset in Power BI. Another person can change the selections in TS - but the same will NOT be reflected in the graphs presented in TS/Power BI as the output. Below is a workaround for how to do it.

The person who wants to take over ownership of a database and dataset needs to do the following:

  • Copy the relevant report in TS
  • Rename the original report in TS (add “_org” for example)
  • Rename the copy to match the original name of the original report
  • Run the new report in TS to create the dataset in Power BI web app
  • Open a report linked to the dataset in Power BI Desktop (e.g. via a .pbix file that you received from the previous owner)
  • Change the data source to the new dataset created in Power BI (usually, if you open a Power BI file that you received from a colleague, a pop-up window will appear where you can change the data source)
  • Publish the report to Power BI
